“Soft Rain” reversible scarf

Let’s face it, cables are fun to knit but the back side can be downright ugly. This is not a problem in a sweater, but what to do with a cable knit scarf? Several years ago I took a class with Lily M. Chin on “reversible cables.” I could not imagine when I sat down in class just how we would do this, but afterward I was obsessed with turning her techniques into a scarf as lovely on the back as the front. As a Pacific Northwest resident, I wanted to create something that represents the gentle rains we have most of the year. After a few false starts and lots of input from fellow knitters, “Soft Rain” was born!

Soft Rain uses a reversible cable motif shaped like falling drops, set in a half-drop pattern with lace spacers. The cables create an interesting 3D effect as the drops twist slightly. This scarf can be made in varying widths by changing the number of repeats. And best of all, the back looks exactly like the front! Select a smooth yarn with excellent drape to make the most of this pattern.
